Sewage Infrastructure Upgrade Underway in Tabqa City
The Technical Department of the Tabqa City Council in Raqqa province is currently overseeing a major infrastructure project aimed at upgrading the local sewage network. The initiative, which began earlier this month in collaboration with the Care organization, addresses long-standing issues caused by the deterioration of the city’s aging wastewater infrastructure.
According to municipal officials, the project involves the replacement of sewage lines across 11 streets within the Rafidayn, First, Third, and Buhaira neighborhoods. The scope of the work spans approximately 1,500 meters of piping. Engineers are installing modern polyethylene pipes, a move designed to enhance the network’s overall capacity and improve the flow and drainage of wastewater in these residential areas.
Abdulilah al-Attiyah, Deputy Head of the Tabqa City Council, stated that the project has reached a 30 percent completion rate, with the entire operation expected to be finalized within a 45-day timeframe. Al-Attiyah noted that the upgrade is a critical response to the frequent blockages and sewage overflows that have plagued these neighborhoods due to the failing state of the legacy network.
Operating in a developed urban environment presents significant logistical challenges. Al-Attiyah highlighted that managing existing underground infrastructure remains the primary hurdle for the technical crews. Furthermore, the council has prioritized public safety and the continuity of local traffic during the excavation and backfilling phases of the project, implementing necessary precautionary measures to mitigate disruption to residents.
Distinguishing this effort from routine maintenance, officials described the project as a comprehensive replacement initiative rather than standard dredging or pressure cleaning. The ongoing efforts are guided by site-specific studies conducted by technical committees to ensure the new network meets the city’s current requirements. These studies will also serve as a blueprint for future infrastructure improvements, which remain a top priority for the Tabqa City Council as it works to modernize public services and improve the quality of life for the local population.
