Syrian Ministry of Education Outlines Readiness Plan for 2026-2027 Year
The Syrian Ministry of Education has officially launched its comprehensive readiness plan for the upcoming 2026-2027 academic year, setting strict standards for the maintenance and safety of school infrastructure across all governorates. In a circular distributed to provincial educational directorates, the ministry outlined the necessary requirements to ensure that schools are fully equipped to welcome students by the start of the academic term on September 6, 2026.
The directive emphasizes the necessity of creating a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for the student body. As part of this national initiative, educational directorates are required to conduct extensive field tours of all school facilities. These inspections aim to verify the structural integrity of buildings, including the condition of ceilings, walls, floors, windows, and doors. Furthermore, the ministry has mandated the remediation of any identified damages or potential hazards in hallways, staircases, and boundary walls to prevent accidents and ensure student welfare.
Beyond basic structural integrity, the readiness plan mandates a thorough assessment of educational infrastructure. This includes ensuring the functionality of classroom furniture, such as desks and chairs, as well as the availability of adequate teaching materials. Schools are also required to confirm the safety of electrical wiring and lighting systems. A high priority has been placed on public health, requiring institutions to verify the quality of drinking water, the cleanliness of water storage tanks, and the proper maintenance of sanitation and sewage facilities.
Safety remains a central pillar of the new circular, with specific instructions regarding fire safety equipment and evacuation protocols. The ministry has directed school administrations to prioritize any repairs that directly impact student safety and to clear school premises of any risks. Extensive cleaning campaigns are to be conducted throughout all facilities, including classrooms, courtyards, and entrances, with a requirement to maintain hygiene standards throughout the duration of the school year.
In preparation for the winter months, the ministry has mandated that heating systems undergo comprehensive maintenance before the onset of the cold season. This includes ensuring that schools have the necessary fuel supplies or operational requirements to keep classrooms warm and functional during the winter term.
School administrators are tasked with preparing detailed reports on the current state of their institutions, highlighting any remaining deficiencies or equipment needs. These reports are to be submitted to the Ministry of Education before the end of August. By conducting this coordinated national effort, the ministry aims to ensure that all government and private schools are fully operational and prepared to facilitate a smooth start to the new academic cycle for students across Syria.
