Raqqa Water Authority Expands Irrigation Infrastructure Repairs
The Water Resources Directorate in Raqqa has intensified its efforts to rehabilitate and maintain essential irrigation infrastructure across the governorate. These ongoing operations are designed to improve the overall efficiency of the regional irrigation system, ensuring a reliable flow of water to sustain agricultural activities and support local farmers.
Recent technical reports indicate that the rehabilitation works cover a broad spectrum of critical infrastructure, including channels, water drains, and various irrigation facilities. These efforts are part of a broader, ongoing strategy to restore the integrity of the hydraulic network, which serves as the backbone of agricultural production in the region.
Among the specific projects completed or currently underway is the clearing of the ‘Wadi al-Fayd’ channel, covering a span of 800 meters. Additionally, teams have addressed structural issues on the lower Salkhbiya channel, particularly at kilometer markers 6 and 11. These repairs involved excavation, backfilling, and soil compaction to stabilize the canal bed. Furthermore, five concrete junctions in the ‘Kasrat Surur’ area were replaced and reinstalled to meet necessary technical specifications, along with the installation of foundations to ensure structural stability and precise water level management.
Efforts have also extended to the ‘Zour Shammar’ area, where the primary channel is undergoing extensive clearing over a distance of 500 meters to prevent blockages and facilitate smoother water distribution. Similarly, critical drainage systems have been addressed, with the main drains in ‘al-Khureita al-Tahtani’ and ‘al-Hawaij’ undergoing clearing operations. Each of these drains has been cleared for 450 meters to enhance discharge capacity and improve water flow dynamics, which is vital for preventing waterlogging and protecting surrounding croplands.
Parallel to these engineering projects, the regional water oversight authority continues to conduct regular inspections. These monitoring activities are intended to identify and address illegal water usage, protect infrastructure from unauthorized interference, and ensure that the newly rehabilitated networks remain in optimal working condition. By safeguarding the integrity of the irrigation system, the directorate aims to enhance investment efficiency in the water sector.
These initiatives are a direct component of the directorate’s comprehensive annual plan to upgrade the readiness of the governorate’s irrigation networks and pumping stations. By focusing on both structural repairs and ongoing maintenance, the authorities are seeking to provide a stable environment for agricultural development, which remains a key pillar of the economy in Raqqa province.
