Syrian Radiology Conference 2026 Kicks Off in Damascus

The Syrian Radiology Conference 2026 began on Thursday at the National University Hospital in Damascus. The event, which serves as a significant platform for sharing local and international medical expertise, is organized by the Syrian Society of Radiologists in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Union of Syrian Doctors and Pharmacists in France.

Over the course of three days, the conference is hosting more than 800 physicians and over 30 specialized lecturers from 10 countries. This extensive participation highlights the commitment of Syrian doctors, both within the country and abroad, to exchanging knowledge and professional experience. The scientific program includes more than 50 lectures and over 20 specialized workshops covering various aspects of radiology. Additionally, a specialized medical exhibition is running alongside the event, where dozens of medical companies are showcasing the latest digital technologies, diagnostic equipment, and new research in the field.

In his opening remarks, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Marwan Al-Halabi emphasized that radiology has evolved beyond simple organ imaging. He described it as a pivotal science in disease detection, clinical decision support, and life-saving efforts. Al-Halabi explained that the Ministry is implementing a strategy that extends beyond upgrading equipment to include building professional capabilities, developing specialized training, and supporting applied research in line with international quality and radiation safety standards.

He further stressed that university hospitals should serve as beacons of knowledge and incubators for innovation, noting the growing role of artificial intelligence in analyzing medical images and enhancing diagnostic accuracy—a technology the Ministry aims to integrate into the health system. Conference President Dr. Fouad Barakat highlighted the importance of the event in reconnecting Syrian doctors worldwide and fostering practical expertise, which remains essential alongside technical advancements.

Dr. Abdul Ghani Al-Shalabi, General Director of the National University Hospital in Damascus, pointed to the conference’s focus on interventional radiology. He highlighted its potential for performing precise therapeutic interventions that reduce surgical risks and accelerate patient recovery. He reaffirmed the need for continuous investment in medical technology and the training of human resources.

The conference agenda covers a wide range of disciplines, including diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology, chest and gastrointestinal imaging, emergency and trauma radiology, and breast imaging. Furthermore, the event features technical workshops for technicians on CT and MRI imaging, aimed at raising the standard of education in radiology and improving professional performance across all Syrian regions.
