Eye Surgery Resumes at Raqqa National Hospital

Raqqa National Hospital has reached a significant milestone in its efforts to enhance local healthcare services. The hospital has received a new shipment of medical equipment and devices provided by the Al-Basar International Foundation, paving the way for the reactivation of its ophthalmology surgery department, which had been out of service for approximately 14 years.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Assaf, Director of Raqqa National Hospital, explained that the new medical supplies include a surgical microscope and an advanced phacoemulsification device, specifically designed for cataract surgery. Dr. Al-Assaf noted that the hospital is now equipped with the necessary consumables and medical tools to perform nearly 400 surgical procedures. This development serves as a fundamental pillar for localizing medical treatment within Raqqa, thereby alleviating the burden on patients who previously had to travel to other governorates to seek specialized medical care.

The hospital’s ophthalmology department is scheduled to begin receiving patients and performing surgical operations starting next Sunday. The hospital director emphasized that, due to space constraints, the department’s initial capacity will be limited. He noted that the administration is currently working on plans to develop the operating rooms and expand facilities to improve the efficiency of patient intake and provide medical services to the largest possible number of people.

For his part, Mohamed Mujawar Mohamed Osman, a representative of the Al-Basar International Foundation, stated that this initiative comes in response to urgent health needs in the Raqqa governorate. He explained that the project aims to support local medical personnel and empower them to perform complex surgeries locally, underscoring the foundation’s ongoing commitment to providing medical care to the most vulnerable populations.

This initiative follows a joint effort between the Ministry of Health and the Al-Basar International Foundation last July, which launched a free campaign at the Raqqa National Hospital to treat patients suffering from cataracts. These efforts are part of a broader, ongoing strategy to strengthen public medical services and combat eye diseases in regions requiring specialized medical support.
