Syria Chess Team Joins Asian Nations Cup in Abu Dhabi

The Syrian men’s national chess team is currently competing in the Asian Nations Cup, an elite continental tournament hosted in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from November 9 to 18.

This year’s edition of the tournament features a significant field of participants, with 30 teams representing 19 countries. In total, 150 players are vying for top honors in one of the most prominent chess events in the region.

According to the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Syrian delegation consists of five players: Bashir Aiti, Aram Adam, Talal Al-Zaeem, Rudy Bakr, and Mazen Fandi. The team is led by Mazen Rabou, the Vice President of the Syrian Chess Federation, who is overseeing the team’s participation in this major Asian sporting event.

This tournament holds strategic and athletic significance, serving as a vital preparatory phase for the participating nations ahead of Abu Dhabi’s hosting of the Chess Olympiad in 2028. For the Syrian team, the event acts as an important opportunity to bolster their presence in the Asian chess circuit while gaining valuable experience through direct competition against some of the most skilled players at both the continental and international levels.

Through this participation, the Syrian delegation aims to deliver a performance consistent with the high standards of the event. The tournament provides a highly organized, professional environment that supports the federation’s broader efforts to develop the sport within Syria and increase the national team’s involvement in major international competitions.
