Syrian Sprinter Hadi Abbas Makes Notable Strides in Athletics

Emerging Syrian sprinter Hadi Abbas has made a significant impact on the athletics scene, delivering a series of performances that underscore his rapid technical development in short-distance racing.

At 17 years old, Abbas secured two silver medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter events during the Arab Youth Athletics Championship recently held in Egypt. Building on these results, data from the Syrian Athletics Federation, supported by official records from World Athletics, identifies Abbas as the second-fastest youth sprinter in the Arab world for the 100-meter dash among athletes under 18 for 2026. This ranking follows his impressive clocking of 10.76 seconds.

Reflecting on his athletic journey, Abbas noted that his career began in earnest in 2022. With the support and encouragement of his father, he participated in his first local youth tournament, where he took first place. This victory served as a primary motivator, prompting him to dedicate himself to intensive training. Guided by his coach, Abbas transitioned to competing in higher age groups, a move he credits with sharpening his skills and providing him with the competitive experience necessary to face more seasoned athletes.

The success achieved at the Arab Championship marks only one milestone in the young athlete’s career. Abbas is currently in Senegal participating in the “Dakar 2026” Youth Olympic Games, which take place this November. He is set to compete in the 400-meter race, joined by his national team colleague Jana Mahala, who will compete in the 200-meter event. These international appearances represent the athlete’s ambition to deliver strong performances and elevate the profile of Syrian sports on the global stage.

The level of competitiveness demonstrated by Abbas at such a young age is seen as an indicator of the potential inherent in Syrian sporting talent. When provided with appropriate care and training, these athletes show a clear capacity to achieve advanced results, setting the stage for future goals as Abbas seeks to continue improving his personal records and pursuing further success in upcoming international competitions.
