Damascus Hosts U-15 National Fencing Club Championship
The Jasmine Sports City in Damascus is set to host the U-15 National Fencing Club Championship starting this Thursday. The event is part of a broader initiative to stimulate sporting activity and expand the base of fencing participants across Syria.
The tournament will feature 9 sports clubs, with a record turnout of approximately 80 male and female athletes. Yahya Al-Zein, President of the Syrian Fencing Federation, described this as the largest participation of its kind compared to previous tournaments involving various age groups. He noted that the high turnout reflects a growing popular and professional interest in fencing within the country.
In a press statement, Al-Zein emphasized that this is the first tournament of its kind held at the club level in Syria. He highlighted its importance as a critical transition phase for young athletes, acting as a stepping stone from foundational training toward participation in higher-level domestic and international competitions. According to the federation president, increasing the frequency of such tournaments and diversifying the competition landscape are fundamental pillars for motivating players to maintain intensive training and enhance their technical proficiency.
Regarding the organization and officiating of the event, Al-Zein confirmed that the Syrian Fencing Federation has finalized all necessary arrangements. A team of 15 specialized committee members and referees has been appointed to oversee the matches, supported by official referees accompanying the participating clubs. Al-Zein noted that the tournament serves as a valuable professional opportunity for new referees to gain practical field experience in match management, contributing to the development of Syrian officiating staff.
According to the official schedule, the first day’s competitions will commence on Thursday at 12:00 PM. The event will continue on Friday and Saturday, starting at 9:00 AM, and will conclude with a ceremony crowning the winners across the various categories and events included in the championship.
