Rehabilitation of Jisr al-Shughur Automatic Bakery Begins

Technical teams, in coordination with relevant authorities and the Idlib Bakery Branch, have officially commenced restoration and rehabilitation work on the Jisr al-Shughur automatic bakery. This initiative is part of a broader plan to improve infrastructure and essential services in the region, with support provided by the Syria Recovery Trust Fund (SRTF).
The comprehensive rehabilitation process involves extensive structural repairs, including the casting of new roofs and the installation of a modern, fully automated production line. Furthermore, the project includes the implementation of a solar energy system designed to ensure consistent operations. All auxiliary equipment and services necessary for the facility’s efficiency in bread production are also being upgraded.
Work is expected to be completed within approximately two months. Once operational, the bakery is projected to reach a production capacity of 20 tons per day, which is sufficient to meet the bread requirements for the city of Jisr al-Shughur and its surrounding countryside.
Ahmed Dani, Director of the Idlib Bakery Branch, noted that the facility served as the primary bread supplier for the area from the time of its construction in the 1980s until it was rendered inoperable by shelling in early 2019. He emphasized that restoring this capacity is a vital step in strengthening local food security and addressing the growing needs of residents as they return to the region.
Hani Khabbaz, Director General of the Syria Recovery Trust Fund, stated that the project is being executed under the “Syria Without Camps” framework. This initiative focuses on the rehabilitation of basic services in areas experiencing a return of displaced residents to their homes. Khabbaz noted that the new production line is capable of meeting the needs of approximately 90,000 people, establishing the facility as a cornerstone for improving regional public services.
Local residents have expressed high expectations for the bakery’s return to service, as it had functioned for decades as the primary source for affordable, high-quality bread for the city and its northern, southern, and western rural areas. This effort is part of ongoing development programs spearheaded by the Syrian Establishment for Bakeries, working in collaboration with national and international partners to ensure the sustainability of essential services for citizens across all Syrian governorates.
