Daraa Completes Rehabilitation of Wadi al-Zaydi to Improve Services

Technical teams from the General Company for Water and Sanitation in Daraa governorate concluded work on Tuesday to clear, maintain, and rehabilitate the Wadi al-Zaydi stream, located in the town of Um al-Mayadhin in the governorate’s eastern countryside. The project was initiated in response to local residents’ requests and aims to address ongoing service issues related to water drainage in the area.

Ziad al-Aqeel, head of the sanitation department at the company, stated that technical field teams worked for four consecutive days to complete the restoration. The operation involved the maintenance and cleaning of 10 inspection manholes along the network line and the targeted axis. By reopening the final manhole, teams successfully restored the smooth flow of water through the pipes to the end of the line, allowing for proper discharge toward fields planted with reeds.

Al-Aqeel confirmed that these measures have directly mitigated the issue of water backing up into the town within the valley stream. This intervention is expected to better protect local infrastructure and private property, while reducing potential collateral damage caused by the accumulation of sewage water.

In an effort to promote environmental sustainability, approximately one and a half dunums of land along the banks of the stream were utilized for the planting of 200 new reed stalks. This initiative is intended to strengthen the soil, ensure the stability of the banks, and improve the environmental and water conditions in the surrounding area.

The completion of these works follows reports circulated by various websites alleging cases of hepatitis in the town of Um al-Mayadhin, which were purportedly linked to sewage water flowing from the city of Busra al-Sham into the valley. The Daraa Health Directorate has officially denied these claims, stating that the area is free of any such infections. The directorate noted that epidemiological investigation teams were dispatched to the site to conduct the necessary examinations and collect samples to ensure the public health and safety of the local residents.
