Energy Ministry Reviews Euphrates Dam Readiness and Maintenance Plans

A high-level delegation from the Syrian Ministry of Energy has conducted a field visit to the Euphrates Dam and its associated hydroelectric plant in Raqqa province. The visit was part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to monitor the readiness of the country’s vital water and energy facilities.
The delegation was led by the Deputy Minister of Energy for Water and Electricity Affairs, Osama Abu Zeid, and included the Director of the Syrian Electricity Company, Omar Shaqrouq, and his deputy, Khaled Abu Di. The primary objective of the inspection was to assess the facility’s current technical status, evaluate the efficiency of power generation units, and review the timelines for both ongoing and future maintenance programs to ensure operational continuity.
During the visit, the officials met with Haitham Bakour, Director General of the General Establishment for the Euphrates Dam, alongside a team of engineers and technical staff. The meeting featured a detailed presentation on the current status of the dam, including a discussion on the technical challenges facing daily operations and the specific requirements needed to support the plant’s infrastructure.
Discussions focused heavily on maintenance plans for the turbines and hydroelectric generation units. The ministry emphasized the necessity of implementing all measures required to preserve the facility’s technical readiness and enhance operational reliability, which is essential for ensuring the sustainable production and security of electrical energy.
This inspection is part of a broader series of field follow-ups carried out by the Ministry of Energy across various provinces to improve production efficiency and address obstacles faced by national technical teams. Maintenance works at the Euphrates Dam have been proceeding on a regular and periodic basis since January 18. These efforts include preventative maintenance for the active generation units, as well as the preparation and upkeep of auxiliary equipment within the hydroelectric plant, all aimed at ensuring the facility operates at maximum capacity while maintaining high standards of safety and operational efficiency.
