Tartus Prepares for Winter with Infrastructure Maintenance

The Water Resources Directorate in Tartus has announced the completion of maintenance and cleaning operations for approximately eight kilometers of water channels and drainage systems. This initiative is part of the governorate’s proactive strategy to prepare for the upcoming winter rainy season.
By enhancing the readiness of water infrastructure and ensuring smooth water flow, the directorate aims to address potential water bottlenecks and mitigate the risks of flooding and water accumulation in critical areas. These measures are designed to safeguard both residential areas and agricultural lands from potential damage during the season.
Engineer Mohammed Mahrez, Director of Water Resources in Tartus, explained that technical teams have conducted field operations across various sectors of the water network. The efforts were focused on several key areas, including clearing 1.5 kilometers of the “MJ6-2” drain, which serves the villages of Bahuzi, Beit Shufan, and Samryan. Additionally, teams cleared 1.5 kilometers of the “MD6” drain at locations previously identified as experiencing recurrent congestion.
Further efforts included the maintenance of two kilometers of the seventh drain located in the village of Al-Hamidiyah. The current phase of the project also involved the clearing of three kilometers along the Abu Al-Ward and Al-Arous riverbeds.
Mahrez emphasized that these works align with the directorate’s broader vision to improve the operational efficiency of the drainage network. By addressing obstructions that could impede water flow or lead to accumulation, the directorate aims to protect surrounding agricultural lands and residential zones. He noted that the directorate will continue to monitor the status of the network periodically to ensure that any additional critical points are addressed as they arise.
These maintenance efforts are part of a broader seasonal campaign in the governorate. On September 21, the Water Resources Directorate concluded a large-scale project in the Baniyas area, where it cleared a total of 15 kilometers of rivers and drainage channels. These proactive measures reflect a general focus on raising the readiness of the water drainage system to prevent challenges typically caused by heavy rainfall in coastal regions.
