Hama Craftsmen Union Honors 150 Distinguished Artisans

The Hama Craftsmen Union recently organized a ceremony to honor 150 distinguished artisans, recognizing their ongoing efforts to preserve traditional handicrafts while modernizing their professional practices to meet contemporary demands. The event highlighted the vital role these craftsmen play in both the local economy and the community.

Abdul Wahab Darwish, head of the Hama Craftsmen Union, stated that the honorees were drawn from 22 craft associations affiliated with the union. The awards recognized a diverse range of professions, including carpentry, blacksmithing, aluminum work, and hairdressing, as well as staff members from vocational training centers. Darwish noted that the initiative is part of a broader union strategy designed to support and foster professional talent.

Fadi Al-Banat, the union’s public relations director, emphasized that the initiative is intended to encourage artisans to continue their pursuit of excellence. He explained that the recognition targeted two distinct groups: seasoned veterans who established these trades with high levels of skill and contributed to the building of the local economy, and younger artisans who are expected to carry forward the legacy of the profession by adopting modern and innovative working methods.

The gesture was well-received by the participants. Mahmoud Sarmini, an electrical contractor, expressed his pride in the recognition, noting its significant morale-boosting impact. Similarly, Mustafa Khureija, a barber with nearly two decades of experience, described the award as a powerful incentive for him and his colleagues to continue their professional contributions and deliver the best possible service in their respective fields.

The Hama Craftsmen Union consists of 24 craft associations and represents a total of approximately 20,000 registered artisans. This membership structure highlights the substantial economic and social importance of the craft sector within the governorate, particularly in terms of job creation and the ongoing support of traditional and essential professional trades.
