First Liberation Football Championship Kicks Off in Tartus
The first Liberation Football Championship officially began on Friday at the sports arena in Tartus. The tournament features eight first-division clubs divided into two groups, organized through a collaboration between the Ministry of Interior, the Syrian Police Sports Federation, and the Tartus Police Club, in coordination with the Directorate of Sports and Youth and the local technical committee for football.
The opening day saw two matches within the first group. The Deir ez-Zor Police team secured a 2-1 victory over Taffatanaz, while the Tartus Police Club defeated Salamiyah 2-0.
The first group consists of the Tartus Police, Deir ez-Zor Police, Taffatanaz, and Salamiyah clubs. The second group comprises Jableh, Hama Police, Al-Shabab, and Jabal al-Zawiya.
Muawiya Hamama, Director of Sports and Youth in Tartus, stated that the tournament is organized to commemorate the anniversary of Syria’s liberation. He noted that the event serves as an important platform for coaching staffs and participating clubs to evaluate player readiness and technical levels ahead of the upcoming first-division general league season. Hamama also expressed intentions to develop the tournament in future editions by increasing the number of participating teams and matches to ensure its continuity as an annual sporting event.
Yahya Othman, Chairman of the Police Club Board of Directors, emphasized the value of the tournament in preparing for the next football season. He affirmed that these matches provide a genuine opportunity for coaching staffs to test player capabilities and experiment with tactical schemes before official competitions begin.
According to the approved tournament regulations, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. The winner of the first group will face the runner-up of the second group, while the winner of the second group will compete against the runner-up of the first group, with the winners of these matches proceeding to the tournament final.
