Explosion of War Remnants Kills One, Injures Another in Daraya
A deadly explosion occurred on Friday in the city of Daraya, located in the Rif Dimashq governorate, after civilians encountered remnants of war. The incident, which took place inside a nursing school building, resulted in the death of one person and left another individual injured.
Khaled Al-Najm, director of the Emergency and Disaster Management Operations Center in Rif Dimashq, provided details regarding the response to the incident. He stated that Syrian Civil Defense teams were deployed to the site immediately following the explosion. Upon arrival, rescue teams recovered the deceased and transported the body to a hospital to complete the necessary legal procedures before handing it over to the victim’s family. The injured individual was transported to a medical facility for treatment by local residents.
Al-Najm emphasized that the nursing school building where the explosion occurred had been completely destroyed and was already out of service. He noted that warning signs had been placed in the vicinity of the site previously to prevent civilians from approaching the area, precisely due to the ongoing hazards posed by unexploded ordnance and war remnants.
In his statement, the director of the Emergency Center urged citizens to exercise extreme caution, advising them to avoid suspicious objects and to refrain from handling any war remnants. He stressed the importance of immediately reporting such items to the relevant authorities to ensure public safety and prevent further casualties.
This incident highlights the persistent threat posed by remnants of war in various regions across Syria. A similar tragedy occurred on the 15th of this month, when an explosion involving a war remnant within an abandoned military barracks on the Hajoula road—which connects Al-Nasiriya and Al-Nabk in Rif Dimashq—resulted in one fatality and one injury. These events underscore the continuing danger that unexploded ordnance presents in areas that were previously the sites of active conflict.
